Working at a scale informed by ancient cave paintings, I create towering drawings.
Inspired by the layered pigments and forms in these pictographs, I was curious about my own layering process, exploring how different black mediums-with their varying degrees of matte finish, thickness, and undertones— interact when superimposed.
As I made the piece, I read the book Cave Art by Bruno David. A quote stood out to me as an idea to call back to while working:
"[Cave art] draws us into its realm as sensual beings who recognize our own emplacement in a varied but always meaningful world. And we explore that meaning by trying to decipher the art, what it looks like, how old it is, what it means, all dimensions of attachment that begin to take shape as we come to connect."
